The Member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga East Constituency, and Former Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, filed a suit against the Assembly member for Zuarungu Central Electoral area, Roland Nsobila Ayambire at the Bolgatanga High Court for defamation of character.
According to Dr Ayine, Mr. Ayambire during the 2016 election campaign, in a political radio discussion on two local radio stations, made defamatory statements against his reputation.
“…He ( Dr Dominic Ayine) is sleeping on the Job…he has done nothing in the past four years…the only thing he has achieved is that he has acquired land at Katanga for rearing cattle and has brought Fulani people who are dangerous, who are known to assault women, kill people …deadly people," Mr Ayambire had allegedly said.
The Assembly member is also accused of further remarking, that, "Government gives him GHC60,000 per borehole, the MP pockets GHC50,000 and uses only GHC10,000 to drill the borehole…”
According to Dr Ayine, these words meant he is deceitful, dishonest, had embezzled public funds, abetted crime, and is not properly representing his constituents.
The suit against Mr Ayambire was filed on the January 17, and he was served the writ of summons on January 23.
Dr Dominic Ayine is demanding GHC 100,000.00 in general damages and GHC 50,000.00 in aggravated and punitive damages respectively.
Speaking to Citi News, Dr. Ayine said he never intended suing the assembly member, but several steps taken to resolve the issue amicably had proved futile.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ayambire confirmed being served the writ of summons, but denied the allegations leveled against him, stating that he has a good defense, and will respond to the suit eventually.
