- A 109-year old woman says she eats bacon almost every day
- Her diet also includes lots of potatoes and kraut
- Yet she does not smoke or drink alcohol
A woman who celebrated her 109th birthday earlier this week is claiming bacon has been one of the most important reasons for her longevity.
But this elderly lady from Illinois, U.S., is not the only one who attributes bacon as being the key to gaining a long life. Other people over 100 also list that specific food as part of their diets.
Ruth Benjamin cites that potatoes have kept her “healthy and happy” as well. She was born in 1908 into a family of six children.
Ruth Benjamin claims she eats potatoes every day, and also regularly has kraut and the crispy pork fats. She has nevertheless never smoked, drank liquor and “I had one husband for 43 years,” she adds. Her marriage was apparently very happy while it lasted.
Benjamin worked at Quakermaid for 43 years, and has travelled extensively. “I’ve been to Hawaii, I’ve been to Washington D.C., I’ve been to Niagara Falls. I’ve been just about everywhere.”
Her doctors on the other hand say her positive attitude and healthy choices have been the key to her longevity. Dr. Jim Turner of Cork Medical Center said "she is happy. And I think that is the key to her longevity.”
