Member of Parliament (MP) for Lawra Constituency, Hon. Anthony Abayifa Karbo has said that former President Mahama had embarrassed northerners.
The Lawra constituency legislator was speaking in Gender Minister-designate, Otiko Djaba's defense and expressed that many northerners were appreciative of Madam Otiko's stance on the SADA issue.
Speaking to Ghanawest, Hon. Karbo said that former President Mahama did embarrass northerners and added that he felt the former head of state should apologize.
“I am a northerner. I feel very embarrassed by what President Mahama did in terms of his legacy with SADA. You will be amazed how many northerners are applauding Madam Otiko for taking that stance. We have been very upset with the manner in which SADA has been managed and mismanaged by a northerner, a man whose father is a farmer.
"A man whose father has been part of the struggle to liberate northerners, [he] finally gets the opportunity to become president, promises his people that he will do a lot to better our lives and only to take GHC 260 million and there is nothing to show. That is a scar on the conscience of any right-thinking northerner… It was such an embarrassment,” he said.
Madam Otiko's gotten into hot water with members of Parliament's Appointments Committee over her statements, with some saying that it is part of the reason why the parliamentary Minority has allegedly rejected her ministerial nomination.
“…when I talked about him being an embarrassment, I spoke in relation to SADA. SADA is very dear to my heart. My mother is a Northerner, the incidence of poverty is highest in the three Northern Regions and for a President who comes from the Northern Region, who promised to alleviate poverty, what happened to the Guinea fowls? It was an embarrassment to me and to the North. The Chiefs of the North actually made that statement and so I don’t owe him or you any apology. We are developing and building a nation,” Madam Otiko noted during her vetting session.
