As part of his campaign promises, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo vowed to appoint an independent Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute corruption allegations in the public sector. According to President Akufo Addo, this move is to ensure that people don't see the prosecution of corrupt government officials as a political witch-hunt.

Speaking at the #Mindspeak event hosted by Aly Khan in Kenya, President Mahama applauded the decision to create the new initiative and grouped it with the NACAP, a framework that was the fruit of a work group - among other stakeholders - he inaugurated on December 9th 2009, during his days as Vice President of Ghana.

"The new administration in Ghana has decided to introduce an independent prosecutor. That’s another step forward after NACAP [National Anti-Corruption Action Plan] and other interventions in the quest to fight corruption."

Although he applauded the Special Prosecutor initiative, President Mahama also shared his own opinion with regards to specific characteristics that would ensure that the Special Prosecutor's office is productive, instead of becoming just another arm of law enforcement at the behest of the current administration.

“But the independent prosecutor must be independent enough and prosecute cases even if [they are] from within this [current] administration.”

President Akufo Addo has nminated popular lawyer Akoto Ampaw as his choice for Ghana's first Special Prosecutor, a partner in the president's law firm, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co.

Popular lawyer, Maurice Ampaw, has criticized the president's choice due to the fact that Mr. Akoto Ampaw is - not only a partner at the president's law firm - a friend of the president and was part of the NPP's Supreme Court petition challenging the 2012 Presidential election results.
