'Kick out' foreigners in retail business

Senior Minister, Mr. Yaw Osafo Maafo, has stated that foreigners who're dealing in retail business, or other businesses reserved for Ghanaian citizens ought to be "thrown out" of the country.

According to the former Finance Minister, legislation made to regulate foreigners engaging in businesses for Ghanaian citizens should be implemented more rigorously.

“Chinese and other foreigners are doing jobs reserved for Ghanaians”, adding: “It is sad, because we have laws in Ghana and the law is very clear…that no foreigner is allowed to enter into retail or wholesale until your capital is above a certain amount.”

Speaking at a Graphic/Stanbic Business Breakfast on Tuesday, February 14th, the Senior Minister said lamented government's lackluster enforcement of these laws and further said that foreigners found to be in breach of these laws should be "thrown out ".

“…Now you see people (foreigners) in small shops selling; what has happened to the law? The law exists but we are not implementing. Those foreigners have no business doing retail business and they must be thrown out. It is as simple as that, we must apply the law,” he said.
