Mr Adjei Larbi, the public relations officer of the ECG has warned certified electricians across the country to desist from posing as agents of the Electricity Company of Ghana, and rather focus on their true jobs.
According to Mr Larbi, these contractors charge huge sums of money from property owners and individuals under the guise of providing them with power, which is not their job. He indicated that such persons will face arrests by the police.
"Any electrician who does not concentrate on his/her work but pose as ECG agents who go about charging whopping sums of money will be arrested by the police," he said.
Speaking at a press conference where the Energy Commission in collaboration with the ECG awarded certificates to 771 electricians who passed exams organized by the commission, the lead officer of the Wiring Programme at the ECG, Mr Solomon Sarpong said that 75% of fire accidents in the country are caused by improper electrical wiring by uncertified electricians.
He stated that wiring inspectors will evaluate the wiring before the ECG will approve connections to any building.
Mr Sarpong further stated that any certified electrician that failed to adhere to the regulations would punished accordingly as the commission will be monitoring their activities.
