Mr. Rebecca Akufo Addo pledges to champion women's causes

Mr. Rebecca Akufo Addo, Ghana's First Lady, marked the International Women's Day with some of Ghana's most accomplished woman. She also took the opportunity to pledge that during her tenure as Ghana's First Lady she would champion the female cause.

Mrs. Akufo Addo was speaking at the event which took place the Firs Lady's offices in Ridge, Accra. Touching on the issue of the lack of women in decision making positions, she pointed out that Ghana's women - who make up more than half of Ghana's adult population - could not be kept out of the country's decision making.

And added that women should band together and help each other achieve their goals.

"We cannot exclude a population that is more than half of Ghana’s population from political decision making. That is no way for us to develop."

"Be the shoulders that other women stand on," and added that, "it is going to be a long arduous battle, but I believe we are up to it."

Mrs. Akufo-Addo commended Ghanaian woman for their tremendous contributions to the country's development. She also observed that if more women joined the cause and got both individuals and institutions to create inclusive working environments, value male and female contributions equally, and strive for more gender-balanced leadership Ghana would soon experience a generation where women hold an equal stake in all sectors of life.

Also in attendance at the event were some of Ghana's most inspiring, and accomplished of the likes of Nana Yaa Asantewaa, Susana Al-Hassan, Sophia Doku Grace, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, Chief Justice Theodora Georgina Wood Former speaker of parliament Joyce Adeline Bamford- Addo, Madam Frema Opare the first Chief of Staff, Dr. Joyce Aryee, Mrs. Esther Ocloo an industrialist, Air force pilot Melody Millicent Danquah just to name a few.
