Mr William Nyarko, the father of the 23-year-old University of Ghana student who allegedly took her life on Wednesday, has told police that she was suffering from mental illness.
Jennifer Nyarko, a final year Consumer Science student, is said to have jumped from the fourth floor of the Akuafo Hall Annex A building on the Legon campus.
The episode sparked questions as to what prompted her to do so, with some people speculating that she had had problems with her relationship.
One of her schoolmates was quoted by the media as saying that Jennifer was having issues with her boyfriend.
But speaking to the Legon Police in Accra, Nyarko, a retiree, said his daughter had been struggling with a mental disorder since 2012 when she gained admission to the university.
He said at a point, she had to defer her course for one year as a result of her condition, a report by the Daily Graphic said on Thursday.
Nyarko said Jennifer had visited them during the weekend and also spent the March 6, 2017, holiday with them at their Adentan residence in Accra.
He said his daughter left for school last Tuesday morning only for them to receive a call announcing her death on Wednesday.
Jennifer was taken to the Legon Hospital in the hospital’s ambulance but was pronounced dead on arrival.
