Mr. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, President Akufo-Addo's new appointee for the position of Mayor of Accra, has referred to previous tactics employed by the Accra Metropolitan Area (AMA) in removing unauthorized hawkers from the street as crude and ineffective.
The newly appointed Mayor of Accra stated that he will be taking a different route. Mr. Adjei Sowah stated that he would be looking into more inclusive ways forward while he waits for the assembly's endorsement.
“Over the years we seem to have used crude tactics to push the hawkers from the streets, but it has not helped us and they come back all the time,” he stated on Monday, March 10.

“In this modern era, we cannot see a policeman or city guard with clubs chasing human beings selling on the streets. I don’t think it is the best way to go.”
According to Mr. Sowah, a way forward that involves dialogue and conversation with the hawkers involved would yield more outcomes compared to previous tactics employed by the AMA.
“I think that by engaging and talking to them we will certainly come to a conclusion as to what direction we should take,” he told Joy FM’s Dzifa Bampoe on Monday March 13.
