- The daycare owner dropped the child off near her home and didn’t make sure the child got inside
- The child strolled two blocks away from her home and ran into a local supermarket telling staff that she was hungry
Police arrested 35-year-old Trimeca Crum, who ran an illegal daycare out of her own apartment in New York.
The police report states that Crum dropped off one of the children, Essiah Love Miller, near her home and drive off before even checking the child got home.
The child never reached her own home and walked about two blocks from the place where Trimeca Crum dropped her off. She strolled into The Brothers Supermarket and told a worker inside that she was hungry.
“She just walked in and she told the cashier, ‘I’m hungry. She stayed calm, she didn’t cry. I think we were more nervous than she was. My brother started asking her some basic questions like where do you live and she didn’t know,” said Carlos Cruz, a manager at the store.
The child told them that her mother was in Jamaica. He adds: “I’m a father and I can’t imagine a little girl walking the streets alone. I’m glad we were able to help her.”
At the same time the child’s aunt arrived home and asked her daughter where Essiah was. The shocked aunt called Crum and filed a missing person report at the local precinct.
The police placed Crum under arrest and reunited Essiah with his aunt.
