A 20-year-old woman in Hertfordshire, Britain, slept in heavy makeup for seven months because she was too self-conscious to let her boyfriend see her skin condition.
Keira Walcott says that as a teenager, she learned how to prepare her own homemade makeup that hid her vitiligo-caused light patches on her skin and that she spent up to 45 minutes applying it on her face everyday.
When she met her boyfriend Owen Savage, she became even more self-conscious and worried that he would not find her attractive, something that forced her to sleep in her makeup.
Speaking of her experience, Keira says: "I hid away for years under layers of makeup, feeling so self-conscious about my patchy skin. My confidence was so low that the only way I found the courage to face the world was if I was lathered in foundation."
Fortunately, Owen saw her natural beauty and accepted her as she was while also encouraging her to accept her condition. As a result, Keira grew in confidence and is now no longer as self-conscious as she was before.
Keira has now launched a cosmetics range known as Kandor Cosmetics, which is based on the same formula she developed at home as a teenager. It is full of vitamins and caters for people with skin conditions such as vitiligo eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.
She says she was first diagnosed with vitiligo, which affects just one percent of the world's population, at the age of 14.
Keira says she has now fully embraced her condition and turned it into something positive, adding: "Customers message me to thank me for creating something that helps them face the world every day. They tell me that, by owning my condition and turning it into a business, I am a role model to them."
