- Former MP says Chinese galamseyers have decimated local frog populations by eating them
Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama constituency, Hon. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has chimed in on the anti-galamsey chorus and said that they have decimated the frog population in the country.
Hon. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, the governing New Patriotic Party's (NPP) former MP for Bantama constituency in the Ashanti Region, has alleged that foreign illegal small scale miners have decimated Ghana's frog population.
According to Hon Kokofu, it's the Chinese galamseyers in particular that the blame should be placed on. He stated that they ruin every water body that they get close to and "eat all the frogs around the area".

“…they have eaten all the frogs in this Country and there is no wonder we don’t hear frogs croaking anymore and that tells us we must take the fight against ‘galamsey’ seriously,” he said, speaking on UTV.
Hon. Kokofu made his opinions known in a discussion regarding the technology and sophistication introduced to the small scale mining industry by Chinese operators, relative benefits that have come with huge ecological degradation.
According to recent statements by President Nana Akufo Addo, the anti-galamsey initiative has not been to demonize Chinese operators, but rather to instill the rule of law in the mining sector.
