- 31 trafficked children have been rescued from the Volta Lake
- The rescue mission has also arrested 11 persons believed to be a part of the illegal act
Close to thirty one children have been saved from the evil hands of child traffickers on the Volta lake in the Volta region.
These children, who were rescued by a joint force including the ministry of gender, children and social protection are currently being taken care of as they undergo counseling and rehabilitation against the trauma they have suffered from their traffickers.
Director-general of the CID, DCOP Bright Oduro, has confirmed to the Ghanaian Times that the rescue has seen eleven persons arrested so far as they (the arrested persons currently assist with investigations).
Ghana has over the years been battling with the menace of child trafficking as thousands of child victims are forced in various forms of hard labour by their traffickers.
Citi FM had earlier reported of how a non-governmental organization, Challenging Heights, rescued over 1600 trafficked children from the Volta Lake in the span of 12 years.
The Daily Graphic, on April 17, also featured the second lady, Samira Bawumia calling for perpetrators of child trafficking to be severely punished so as to set as a deterrent to others.
But despite all these advocates, the menace of child trafficking is still feared to be on the high side. One can only reckon that the practice emanates from the lack of jobs in the Volta region considering the fact that the Volta lake remains the main source of livelihood for hundreds of unemployed persons.
