A new law in which seeks to punish WhatsApp group administrators for sharing fake news
This move is to make sure "group admins" manage their platforms and disallow others from sharing fake news.
Individuals that are found guilty of sharing fake news not only on WhatsApp but also on Facebook may face jail time according to the law.
The new law was passed in a joint order by District Magistrate Yogeshwar Ram Mishra and Senior Superintendent of Police Nitin Tiwari.
The law also warns group admins to immediately delete anyone they suspect of posting fake news on their platforms or they will be held accountable themselves.
They are also to monitor messages that may contain hate against other religions or races.
The move is expected to affect more than 200 million people who are registered on WhatsApp in India.
