YEN gathers that the 2017/2018 Diversity Visa lottery saw close to a million Ghanaians apply. Out of these applications, 50,000 of all 150,000 selected applicants will be granted visas to permanently live in one of the world’s most advanced countries – America.

“Those who registered for the Diversity Visa lottery back in October can go to dvlottery.state.gov and check their status, using the confirmation code you received when you registered. Remember, we will never, ever email, call or SMS you to tell you you've been selected. You *must* go to dvlottery.state.gov and enter your confirmation code to check your status,” the US embassy in Ghana has disclosed.

The scramble for US visas, especially in Ghana, raises the issue of how poised most citizens are to not just changing their geographical location but also improving their economic lives.

But there is an irony to this program because in as much as America is opening its gates to thousands of immigrants across the world, the country under the leadership of Donald Trump is finalizing moves to mercilessly deport several African immigrants – Ghanaians included – who possess the wrong papers.
