Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) winner of the Artist of the Year, Joe Oscar Mettle, has been interviewed by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) over his recent successes.
Speaking to the BBC, Joe Mettle related that the gospel music industry in Ghana has matured. He stated that compared to “back in the day”, the gospel scene had made obvious advancements. He hinted that in this day and age where everything is “falling apart”, one needed the kind of peace and joy that – we suppose – gospel music brings to one’s life.
Responding to a question by the BBC’s Akwasi Sarpong as to how he [Joe Mettle] would rate the gospel industry beyond its spiritual fulfilment, Joe Mettle simply said the genre is doing better now.
He also pointed out that his winning the artist of the year award went a long way towards boosting the industry’s profile.

“It means for me that anything is possible. It may not be played in the night clubs or the other places but there is a church; there are people that are always encouraged by these songs.
It serves a different purpose from what the Afro beat or the hip hop will do, but it still has an influence. It may get you dancing, it may get you grooving but what we do has been sort of over looked for a while but we’re glad that it’s been recognised now,” Joe Mettle noted.
Joe Mettle said that he wanted to touch people’s lives, and change people’s attitudes for the better with his music. He also expressed that he hoped to inspire people to aim higher and do what they thought was impossible.
Joe Mettle isn’t the only gospel singer to receive great honors this year. Recently, London based gospel singer, Sonnie Badu was award with the Key to the City of Brooklyn for his gospel prowess. He also received the United Nations Ambassador Commander of most Distinguished Order of Special Envoys.
