- A taskforce in the Ashanti Region has destroyed some “Chang Fang” machines used in galamsey activities
- The joint operation by the police and Association of Small Scale Miners struck out against artisanal miners along the Offin River
The fight against galamsey seems to be picking up as some "Chang Fang" machines supposedly used in artisanal mining were set ablaze.
The operation, a joint initiative of the police and Anti Illegal Mining Taskforce of the Small Scale Miners Association in the Ashanti region took place in the Atwima Mponua District.
They taskforce clamped down on artisanal miners who have defied the government's directive to stop all illegal mining activities in the country. Led by the Atwima Mponua District Police Commander, ASP Andrews Aboagye, the force set ablaze 14 machines which they had earlier confiscated from miners along the Offin River.
The miners had taken up their activities at Bontomuruso, Achiase and Atuntuma.
Despite the operation, no arrest was made as the defiant galamsey operators took to their heels upon sighting the officials.
The queen mother of Atuntuma, Nana Afrah Saah, together with some Unit Committee members were said to be the owners of some of the machines.
