- The Free SHS program is said to be implemented later this year
- The education minister has disclosed the program will only be available to students who have excelled in their exams
The Education Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh has disclosed that the Free SHS policy will be only applicable to students who have excelled at their studies.
According to the education minister, as the program is getting ready to be rolled out later this year, it will only be available to basic school students that proved themselves as brilliant students.
Dr. Prempeh was speaking on Starr FM's morning show on Tuesday, when he stated, "Since people want to benefit, they will employ their students to study very hard to pass the exams, because there is still a pass there. It is not how the free will be to enjoy, but you have to pass an exam and indeed to study, so let’s get that one done first.
If you fail an exam how can you benefit from something free; I am surprised. Even now it’s not everyone that gets the chance to go in even with what they pay because if you fail, you fail. How can somebody who has failed progress?"
The Free SHS policy was the NPP government's flagship promise during the 2016 electioneering period, during which the NPP promised to make the policy inclusive of all students from the basic level.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has promised the Free SHS policy will not churn graduates that will not have the needed skills to survive in the modern world.
According to the president, his government's new educational reforms will focus on skills training as well as investing infrastructure and the proper training of teachers.
