- A 79-year-old great-grandmother has graduated from college
- She got married at 18 and decided to go back to school after retirement
- She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Studies
Ordinarily, one would expect a great-grandmother sitting in a college graduation hall to be celebrating one of her younger offspring.
However, 79-year-old Lucy Capers was sitting at the University of Maryland's graduation hall on Sunday, May 14 as a graduate in her own right.
She was being conferred her Bachelor of Science in Computer Studies degree as her offspring looked on in pride.
In an interview with ABC News, Capers said she got married at 18 and decided to focus on raising her three children while working for the federal government.
When she retired, the urge to return to school was too strong to resist, leading her to obtain two associate degrees before her latest achievement.
Capers emphasized that she always had a yearning to learn new things, adding: “Education is the key. Just having that knowledge is everything."
She hopes to inspire the younger generation to seek education no matter their age or challenges they might face.
Her achievement is indeed inspiring.
