Madam Donkor's visit to the family came as they marked his "one week" observation.
The politician was pictured preparing to sign a book of condolence opened by the family for the fallen soldier.
The move, however, drew mockery from some social media users, as Madam Akua Donkor cannot read and write.
The social media users speculated on what she could have written in the book, with one saying she wrote "Da Yie".
Major Mahama was heading for a 20 kilometre walk last Monday when he was attacked by residents of Denkyira Obuasi, according to a police investigative report.
Police say 10 kilometres into the walk, he stopped to buy snails from some women in the community and was reaching into his pocket for money to pay them when one of the women spotted a gun tied to his waste.
The woman, according to the police account, called William Baah, the assembly man in area, and reported that she had sighted an armed robber.
The assembly man then quickly organised people in the community to beat and kill the soldier, police said.
The mood of the nation veered from shock to anger, following the brutal killing.
The killing also provoked a resolve of "never again" among Ghanaians, with many railing against the phenomenon of mob justice.
Over 30 people have so far been arrested in connection with the killing.
The president has said that army officer will receive a state burial.
He has also pledged to see to it that a monument is constructed in his memory.
