Two victims, a naval officer and wife of a military officer have been pronounced dead in the Western Region after consuming a popular locally manufactured drink, Mahogany bitters.
Reports say the Naval officer had visited ‘Pito Bar’ a well-known spot in Takoradi to boost his appetite for food over some drinks.
Unfortunately, he went unconscious after taking the drink and was later pronounced dead after he was rushed to the hospital. Rumours say his wife also died under similar circumstance.
Other people from the pub who purportedly took the same drink had also been admitted to the hospital.
The owner of the pub is however in the custody of police in Takoradi to investigate the strange happenings surrounding the death of the two.
Police are also testing the drink as part of their investigations.
Indigenes of the area, however, believe that the victims died of other causes than the drink.
They explained that Mahogany Bitters was very widely accepted and not yet killed anyone. Although they suspect the drink may have been poisoned.
