- The police have arrested 63 suspects in connection with the lynching of an old woman
- The 63 were picked up in a swoop on Saturday
The police in the Upper East Region of Ghana has arrested 63 suspects in connection with the lynching of a 67-year-old at Penlugu market.
The woman was accused of being a witch.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, the Bolgatanga police command confirmed the arrest of the 63 persons.
According to the Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Samuel Punobyin the suspects will be lined up Sunday for an identification paraded.
”… 63 male suspects including a lady are being held for investigations. We conducted this swoop based on intelligence because we were told the lynching of the deceased was done by people living in the area,” he said.
He added that the innocent suspects will be released after the investigations. Mr Punobyin also reiterated the police commitment to getting all perpetrators involved in the lynching to face the law.
Ghanaians now frown against any form of instant or mob injustice. This follows the lynching of a military officer, Major Maxwell Adam Mahama by some residents of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region leading to his demise.
The soldier was mistaken for an armed robber. The painful death of the soldier has become a dent on the conscience of Ghanaians.
He was given a state burial Friday, June 9, 2017.
