YEN.com.gh came across the interesting story shared by a beautiful mum-to-be who also happens to be a sickle cell survivor and advocate.
Beautiful Anne Welsh is about to become a mother for the second time, but that's not the only reason why she is happy to be sharing her pregnancy journey.
Being a Sickle cell carrier and being heavily pregnant, Anne was overjoyed to finally be able to attend a baby shower held in her honour, after missing out on the first one thrown for her 7 years ago.
According to her, she had to be rushed to the hospital on the day of her surprise shower before she welcomed her son all those years ago.
Explaining how tough it is to be pregnant while living with sickle cell disease, Anne wrote:
"Sickle cell disease often becomes more severe – and pain episodes more frequent – during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester. A pregnant woman with sickle cell disease is more likely to have a miscarriage, preterm labor, or a low-birth-weight baby. Sickle cell pregnancies are almost always considered high risk."
Sharing her joy following her ability to finally be able to attend a baby shower held in her name, Anne took to her Facebook page to write:
"I recently had the honour of celebrating my baby shower in London at the Berkeley Hotel with friends and family; what an unforgettable day! I was showered with so much love to welcome the arrival of my first baby girl, the future sister to my 7 year old son.
As a sickle cell patient, the process of being pregnant has not been easy, but I continue to focus my energy on positive thoughts and discount any negative ones.
Having a successful baby shower means so much to me because I was unable to attend my son’s shower as I was rushed to hospital with a severe sickle cell flare up.
This time around, my sisters and I prepared for the worst but hoped for the best. To our surprise, we were able to celebrate without any distractions and the day could not have gone better.
Thank you to those who have shown such an unbelievable amount of love and support throughout my journey as we welcome our bundle of joy with open arms."
