Meshach Armah, a taxi driver in Gomoa Akotsi-Ojobi in the Central Region Tuesday afternoon was beaten up by a police officer after the driver failed to comply with the officer’s demands after being stopped for an offence.
The police officer, Corporal Charles stopped Meshack and charged him with wrongful parking. As a fine, the police officer asked the driver to pay GHc 100 for the offence. When the driver failed to come up with the money, the police officer is said to have beaten him up.
Narrating the incident in an interview with Adom News, Vice Chairman for Gomoa Akotsi – Ojobi bus station, Francis Opoku said when Meshack failed to pay the money demanded by Corporal Charles for his wrongful parking offence, the law enforcement personnel “put his hands” on the driver which has landed the driver in the hospital.
Francis Opoku revealed that the police officer in question was stationed at Senya Bereku was fond of roughing up the drivers who used the Kasoa route.
Some angry taxi drivers who got wind of the unfortunate incident besieged the Gomoa Ojobi police station in search of Corporal Charles. They had gone to the station to exact revenge on the police officer for beating up their colleague.
They petitioned the station to bring to book the “police armed robber” before the worst happens. Many of the drivers who heard the incident were not surprised because they said that the police officer was “fond” of that behavior.
ASP David Osei Foffie, the district Police Commander, gave the assurance that he was going to look into the matter and bring the guilty party to book.
