-The case has been referred to the High Court of Appeal
Kwame “Conte” Bonsu, the former player of Swedish second division side, Gefle IF who was charged with assaulting his Swedish ex-wife and sentenced to 2 years imprisonment is set to get an appeal hearing.
On 9 June, 2017, a court in Gavle, Sweden found midfielder Kwame Bonsu guilty of charges of assault brought against him by his ex-wife, Maria Magnusson. After the hearing, the court ordered the footballer to pay fines to the tune of $28,000 to his former wife.
However, there has been a turn ofevents since the sentencing. New evidence have come up which lawyers of the footballer believe are substantive enough to mount an appeal.
The new developments have led for the case to be referred to the High Court of Appeal by the Criminal Cases Review Commission, due to the fresh evidence provided by Bonsu and his relatives.
In a new interview with Goal.com, sister of the accused, Nana Yaa Boatemaa was confident that her brother was framed by Maria Magnusson after he decided to divorce her over some misunderstandings.
She said that her brother’s wife wanted to save her marriage which she knew was ending. When all her attempts to reconcile with Kwame Bonsu failed, she decided to frame him up to disgrace him and cause him his footballing career.
After the sentencing hearing, a video went round on social media showing a recorded video in which Maria Magnusson, was heard to be saying that she married the footballer for his money.
Mother of the footballer, Madam Akosua Attaa in an interview yesterday, made a passionate appeal to the government to intervene in her son’s situation to get justice. She openly shed tears on the T.V programme to get the appropriate bodies to act in her son's favor.
