Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has officially rescinded his decision not to take penalty kicks for the Black Stars.

The 31-year-old was responsible for missing a last-gasp penalty against Uruguay in the quarter-final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Gyan again failed to convert from the spot during Ghana’s semi-final loss to Zambia at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

The striker, subsequently, stirred controversy when he decided to return to penalty-taking duties in a recent friendly involving Ghana and USA – with many Ghanaians wondering if he was permanently back to taking penalties for the Black Stars.

However, he has now confirmed rescinding his decision, insisting he has now “decided to start taking it [penalties] again.”

Yes I had initially stated I was not going to take penalty kicks for Ghana, but I have reflected on it and I have decided to start taking it again,” Gyan said in an interview with GTV.

I know Ghanaians are disappointed because I have missed a couple of penalty kicks in crucial games but as a footballer, that has been the only challenge in my career.

“For now, I have decided to go back and take penalties for the Black Stars and break that jinx, I wanted to break that jinx in the game against USA but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

But for now I have decided to take penalty kicks for the Black Stars again.

Gyan’s latest decision is bound to spark controversy, having seen Andre Ayew take up the role of first-choice penalty taker for the Balck Stars.

It is, however, unknown if the West Ham midfielder will forfeit penalty-taking duties now that Gyan has rescinded his decision.
