- The National Chairman of the PNC has said he is saddened by the new appointment of Dr. Mahama as an ambassador with the current government
- He described the situation as unacceptable since Dr. Mahama had previously chastised party members who were offered such positions in past governments
- The 2016 PNC flagbearer has been advised to resign from the party or decline his new post
Bernard Mornah, the National Chairman of the People’s National Convention has expressed disappointment in the appointment of Dr. Edward Mahama as an Ambassador-at-large with the current government.
The chairman bemoaned the new development, describing it as a betrayal to the principles of their party.
He argued that Dr. Mahama had previously chastised PNC members who accepted appointments from previous administrations, as such his new position is unacceptable.
Mr. Mornah was speaking on Starr FM on Tuesday, when he said he is not pleased by the news, as he was not consulted before the appointment was signed and sealed, hence he finds it hard to accept that his colleague would follow that path.
Describing the position as Dr. Mahama ‘pseudo aligning’ himself with the NPP government, Mr. Mornah further stated: “if it was wrong to serve under president JJ Rawlings…if in his view it was wrong to serve at the higher office of vice president under president Kufuor, or as a minister of health, it cannot be right to serve as an ambassador of ambassadors.”
President Akufo-Addo swore-in 21 ambassadors on Monday, including his former opponent in the 2016 election race, Dr. Edward Nasigri Mahama, as an Ambassador-at-large.
The politician has since been criticized widely by his colleagues and fellow party members for accepting the position from the government.
However, Dr. Mahama has debunked this criticisms, stating the new role is an opportunity to offer his service to God, Ghana and President Akufo-Addo.
According to the General Secretary of the PNC, Mr. Atik Mohammed, the party was not made aware of this new development until it was publicly announced this week.
He opined that it would serve Dr. Mahama’s best interests to resign immediately from the party or resign from his post.
