- Malam Issa has called for the dismissal of Dr. Edward Mahama from his post at the PNC
- He says the PNC flagbearer’s new role is a betrayal to his party and should attract severe sanctions
The former National Chairman of the People’s National Convention, Malam Ali Yusif Issa, has advised the party’s leadership to sack their 2016 flagbearer, Dr. Edward Mahama from post.
According to him, the party ought to enforce strict sanctions on Dr. Mahama for accepting the position as Ambassador-at-large with the current government, without consulting his party executives.
He stated that Dr. Mahama's action is a betrayal to the PNC, hence he should be removed from his position in the party.
Mr. Issa lambasted the PNC leader for taking a position with the current administration, when he criticized him (Malam Issa) for accepting the position as Minister of Sports during Former President Kufuor’s tenure.
Speaking to Class FM, Mr. Issah stated: “I was surprised [Dr Mahama accepted the appointment] because this is Dr Edward Mahama who in 2000 the former President John Agyekum Kufuor offered him the vice presidential candidate of his party and he turned it down with a lot of excuses that he didn’t want anything to do with NPP.
He gave all sorts of excuses as to why he thinks that PNC were of different background and traditions from the NPP and, therefore, impossible for him to accept the running mate of a different tradition…all for you to now turn around to accept an appointment called ambassador-at-large. Only heaven knows what his function is going to be.”
Mr. Issa opined that Dr. Mahama was probably down on his luck financially, which led to his acceptance of the role.
He further said new Ambassador’s age worked against him, as he would probably not have the chance to travel as much as the role suggests.
Meanwhile, the PNC will hold a meeting to determine the fate of their flagbearer, following the announcement of his new position.
According to the General Secretary of the PNC, Mr. Atik Mohammed, the party was not made aware of this new development until it was publicly announced this week.
He opined that it would serve Dr. Mahama’s best interests to resign immediately from the party or resign from his post.
