Vice president Bawumia inaugurates Prison Council; hints of plans to recruit 1000 new officers

According to him, the motive behind the intended act is to ensure that the performance of the service is at par with internationally recognized standards in the administration of prisons.

The Vice President again stated that the undesirable ratio of officers to prisoners has led to consequences that do not augur well for the service.

He added that, over the years, prisons all over the world are becoming more of rehabilitative centres rather than mere custodians for accused persons.

To him, though some form of rehabilitative works had been carried out in our country’s prisons, there was a lot more that could have been done.
