- Tarkwa Police have arrested 10 Chinese national over galamsey
- They have named one Alhaji as the one behind their activities
The Police in Tarkwa Divisional Command have arrested ten Chinese national over illegal mining (galamsey), activities in the western Region.
According to the Security Officers, the Chinese were caught in the act in a broad day while digging galamsey trenches, right opposite Tarkwa Senior High School at Efua Nta Kamponase.
Nine of the illegal Chinese nationals, have agreed to their offense but claims they were contracted by one Alhaji, whose full name they refused to disclose to the police.
One of the suspects who claimed innocent after the arrest, told security officers he has only been in Ghana for two months now as a tourist, yet was unable to name one tourist site he has visited upon further interrogations.
The illegal miners were arrested Wednesday afternoon following a tip-off by a group known as Volunteers Against Illegal Mining, under Western Regional Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
A Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Benito Owusu Bio, had to leave a national stakeholders forum to calm tension and see to situation after the arrest.
According to the deputy minister, the suspects will be transferred to Accra for urgent prosecution.
