- The Information minister says come 2020, Nana will run for the presidency again
- He states the president made no official declaration at the press briefing of that intent, as one cannot be sure of life’s uncertainties
The Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid has said President Akufo-Addo will be on the ballot paper for the New Patriotic Party in the 2020 elections.
Mr. Hamid was reacting to the president’s comments that he could not be certain if he will be running for the presidency again in the next election period.
President Akufo-Addo was speaking at his maiden press briefing at the Flagstaff on his first 6 months in power, when he commented on the threats by illegal miners to vote him out of power if he kept fighting against galamsey.
“Well, the 2020 vote it’s not clear if Akufo-Addo’s name will be on the ballot in the first place and even if his name is on the ballot, this is not going to be the reason why I’ll stop, I’m going to continue,” President Akufo-Addo said.
This remark raised questions on the president’s future after his first term in office, however the information minister in an interview Class FM on Wednesday, was confident of a second term.
He noted that indeed, life had its uncertainties, and the president could not explicitly declare to the country that he would run for a second term.
“That’s why Muslims always prefix whatever they say with Inshallah – God willing – so that is what he meant because it is too premature to be talking about 2020 when we don’t even know what will happen before that time,“ Mr. Hamid added, explaining since the president is not God, he could not make such bold declarations.
According to him, the president seeks to leave a legacy that the galamsey menace ended during his tenure, as such this fight against it only shows Nana Addo will not go beyond one term.
