The twin's mother identified as Shona went into labour at just seven months, and medics intimated that they could not save the toddlers.

The pregnancy had achieved 23 weeks - one week short of the 24-week legitimate point of confinement for premature births in England and Wales.

Specialists said they were ready to intercede and there was a remote possibility they could spare them.
