- The APC founder has admonished the Vice President for failing to create more opportunities for Kayayeis
- According to him, majority of these headporters are from Bawumia’s hometown
The founder and leader of the All People’s Congress, Hassan Ayariga has launched fresh verbal attacks on the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to the politician, Dr. Bawumia’s hometown of WaleWale in the Northern Region is home to close to 90% of the head porters in our markets known as Kayayei.
“You should take them off the streets and train them. By scraping the levies we are only encouraging them and I tell you when I become president it will be illegal to carry things on your head as a head porter. The head must be used to think and manufacture things to develop the country,” Mr. Ayariga said.
In a report by MyNewsGh.com, he opined that allowing these activities to continue in the 21st Century is shameful, and asked the vice president what efforts he has contributed to ensure the lives of these women take a more positive turn.
Mr. Ayariga stated he was saddened to watch the parade of the Kayayeis during the inauguration ceremony of President Akufo-Addo earlier this year.
“I cried in my heart not because of the copied speeches and all that…but how we brought the kayayei to come and march past with goods on their heads in front of all those presidents. When the head is supposed to be used to develop ICT and computers,” Mr. Ayariga stated.
