-A medical doctor has been arrested for allegedly stealing a facilty from a government hospital
-The medical equipment is believed to be valued at GHc 50,000
-The equipment was intercepted on its way to a private medical facility believed to belong to the said medical officer
Dr Alexander Osei Bonsu, a Medical Superintendent of the New Abirem Government Hospital, is in the grips of the police in the area over alleged theft of some medical equipment belonging the hospital and believed to be valued at GH¢50,000.
Superintendent Emmanuel Amoah of the New Abirem District Police Command in an interview with the Ghana News Agency indicated that the suspect had been released on bail pending investigation into the theft.
According to reports on the matter, some members of the neighborhood watch committee received a tip-off around 4 AM on Sunday about some equipment being transported from the New Abirem Government Hospital to a private health facility. The Watch Committee therefore put measures in place to intercept the transportation of the equipment.
According to Superintendent Emmanuel Amoah, after the vehicle believed to be transporting the medical equipment was intercepted, the driver was interrogated and he (the driver) indicated that was acting on the instructions of Medical Superintendent, Dr. Alexander Osei Bonsu.
The driver also added that he was transporting the GHc 50,000 equipment to another health facility in Kumasi which had started operating in Kumasi.
The Neighborhood Watch Committee then reported the issue to the police who moved in to effect the arrest of the medical practitioner after the driver who was transporting the equipment had also been taken into police custody.
