Jerry John Rawlings is the new sanitation ambassador for AMA

- Rawlings indicated that he is willing to ensure that people realize the importance of keeping a clean environment

- The AMA boss was impressed with how former president Rawlings had kept his compound neat

- He also stated that 'saman saman', which was prevalent during the time of Ghana's first president, Dr. Nkrumah, would be reintroduced

Former president Jerry John Rawlings, has accepted the role of ambassador for a new sanitation campaign by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The two main objectives of his new role are to encourage those who clean their surroundings clean to continue to do so, and to penalize those who fail to do same.

Rawlings has been identified as someone who maintains a clean home.

The AMA has cautioned at least two companies who refused to keep their environs clean; they have been served notices and given five days to clear the refuse.

The mayor of Accra, Nii Adjei Sowah, who led a number of sanitary inspectors to inspect some selected areas in the metropolis, paid a visit to the former president to discuss the role with him.

He stated that the core reason the Assembly settled on Rawlings was because he was very particular about the neatness of his compound.

According to him, both the internal and external sections of the house where neatly kept.

Rawlings, in accepting the role, stated that he is ready to keep up the pressure, so that people would do their best to clean their environments.

He admitted that even though there was a challenge with regard to waste disposal in Accra, it was a collective responsibility to ensure that the city is habitable.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the AMA indicated that plans are in place to introduce the ‘saman saman’ concept, where AMA officials inspected homes and offices.

He is convinced that the it is best way to deal with the challenges of sanitation, as it was known to yield positive results when it was prevalent during the term of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

It however fizzled out over time.
