- Martin Amidu has held the previous NDC administration responsible for the current chaos at the Electoral Commission
- He blamed the past government for their attempt to use Charlotte Osei to win the elections in their favor, which rather failed
Lawyer and outspoken governance critic, Martin Amidu has blamed the current tension and rot at the Electoral Commission of Ghana on the maneuverings of the previous John Mahama administration.
YEN.com.gh gathered that the former Attorney General held the NDC to fault for their decision to appoint Madam Charlotte Osei, whom he described as ‘incompetent’.
Ina an article cited by media houses, the lawyer alleged that Mrs. Osei was appointed to rig the elections in favor of the NDC but their plan failed.
“But as I said time without number during the 2016 elections, she was appointed by a corrupt Government precisely because of her incompetence that made her susceptible for use for an election rigging agenda.
Her appointing Government failed in the rigging agenda despite all the attempts by the Commission to narrow the election to a two-party race to facilitate easy rigging for the incumbent. She has, either on her own or at the instance of her mentor, been trying to recycle herself as a neutral Electoral Commissioner after her Church Papa mediated her peaceful announcement of the election results,” he said.
Mr. Amidu’s remarks follow the recent wave of allegations that hit the EC, after the chairperson, Charlotte Osei was accused by her deputies for among other things, being incompetent as well as corrupt.
Charlotte Osei in turned has accused them of misappropriating the institution's resources, and filed a suit against them for defamation.
A petition was launched against the EC chair, demanding that she be impeached, which was addressed to the Presidency. President Akufo-Addo then forwarded the petition to the Chief Justice to probe the matter.
Mr. Amidu further said the NDC can only blame itself, should all three or just two or one of the EC commissioners are sacked from post.
“I hope the NDC has learnt bitter lessons from the John Mahama Government’s inept looting and losing leadership style and wish to God that we can collectively reorganize the party to instil that level of integrity and honour that will give us a chance in the nearest future to return to lead a true incorruptible social democratic Government of the people and for the people of Ghana,” he added.
