An image, which has since gone viral on social media, seems to show the president standing on a podium decorated with the red, gold, green and Black Star flag of Ghana.

Nana Addo is flanked by two police officers as he is seen speaking into a microphone.

Some Ghanaians were outraged that the such a national symbol had been reduced to being used to decorate a podium.

One user of Facebook, Godwin Dogbey, expressed his exasperation stating, "Who decorated the platform. Why Ghana flag, can't it be anything? Every country's flag is a source of pride".

Another user, Gifty Johnson, expressed his anger saying, "how dare you dirty our Nations flag".

However, other users on the same medium hopped to the defense of the president of the country.

According to one Flint Kwame Honour, the red part where Nana Addo stood was indeed a carpet and not part of the Ghana Flag which was draped around the flag.

A look at the image in a closeup shot from the same event showed the president was rather standing on a red carpet and not the Ghana flag as some had postulated.

This is not the first time the Ghana flag and it's position has become an issue of contention for the current president of Ghana.

Barely weeks into taking office as president of Ghana, Nana Addo stirred social media debates as the Ghana flag was seemingly turned upside down in a picture shared on social media.

In the image, the president is seen engaged with some diplomatic officials, clearly oblivious to the blunder behind him.
