- Dr Afari Gyan's name has pop up in EC's auction list
- Document shows he acquired a minibus through the auction
It is emerging that, former Chairman of Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan acquired a 2008 Nissan minibus belonging to the commission for GHS2,675 in an auction.
According to 2015 report by the Auditor General, the minibus together with other vehicles were purchased for the commission in 2007.
The Nissan vehicle, bought by the Dr Afari Gyan was among several others auctioned to some staff of the EC and the general public, after it was valued by the State Transport Company (STC).
Madam Charlotte Osei, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament today maintained that, Dr Afari Gyan and all other beneficiaries fully paid for the vehicles.
However, Madam Osei could not verify an exact amount the election body expended in paying the auctioneer for services provided.
The Deputy Chairperson of the EC, Amadu Sulley on his part insisted that, the auction process was transparent, adding that, it was widely opened to the general public.
According to reports, the EC estimated the cost of the cars at GHS402,328 but the actual amount realized after the auction was GHS83,000, a situation that caused the committee to wonder why the huge “discrepancy”.
But Madam Osei who was before the committee explained that, the fair value estimate of GHS402,328 was given by officials within the commission who were not experts at valuing vehicles.
