- An Indian woman has divorced her husband of five years
- This is because he failed to build a toilet in the home
- A judge ruled that forcing the woman to relieve herself outdoors was a form of torture
An Indian woman in the state of Rajasthan has been granted leave to divorce her husband of five years after he failed to build a toilet in their home.
Throughout their five-year marriage, the unnamed woman, who is in her 20s, had to relieve herself in the open-air fields surrounding their home.
While granting the woman the permission, a judge noted that forcing her to use the fields for such a long time amounted to a form of torture.
During the hearings, the court heard that women in the area often had to wait for nightfall to relieve themselves.
Besides being uncomfortable for them, this also put their safety at risk.
The judge reportedly said: "We spend money on buying tobacco, liquor and mobile phones, but are unwilling to construct toilets to protect the dignity of our family."
Many rural areas in India do not have proper toilets. The Indian government has pledged to provide every household with a toilet by 2019.
