Pneumonia, bronchitis surpasses HIV/AIDS as the leading cause of death in Africa

- Pneumonia and bronchitis are presently the main cause of death in Africa according to a new study

- The two diseases are the leading cause of death among children globally

- Over a half a million people succumbed to HIV/AIDS in 2015

HIV/AIDS is not any more the main cause of death f in Africa, a new study has suggested.

According to the World Health Organization, HIV/AIDS now ranks second.

The WHO report suggested that there was a significant drop in HIV/AIDS-related deaths in 2015, compared to past years.

Despite fewer people dying as a result of the virus, experts say the rate is still too high since preventive strategies have become better over time.

Respiratory infections including pneumonia and bronchitis is the leading cause of death among Africans.

In 2015, about sixteen per cent of kids aged below 5 years across the world are said to have succumbed to pneumonia or bronchitis making it the world's main cause of death among children.

Diarrhoeal-related deaths were ranked third in the report.

Be that as it may, HIV/AIDS still plagues most people in the continent.
