According to him the US instituted the policy at a time when their level of development was just like that of Ghana.
Speaking at a short ceremony to unveiled Free SHS policy at the Flagstaff House, Nana Akufo-Addo said he is looking forward to a successful implementation of the flagship programme under his tenure.
Akufo-Addo insisted that though Ghana’s economy cannot be compared to that of the United States, it is always good for a country to begin a good initiative with resources available at its disposal.

He added that his administration would make the Free SHS policy a top priority to ensure effective implementation.
“The USA implemented Free SHS policy a century ago when their level of development was not very much more than ours. If we understand that connection, we will all support this initiative,” the President said.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader as part of his 2016 campaign, promised to make Junior and Senior High education entirely free for all Ghanaian children.
The Free SHS promise by the NPP, was met with fierce attacks and criticisms from some members of the then ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
