- Agric workers say government’s claim of victory over the fall army worm invasion is untrue
- Government through the sector minister maintains that the fall armyworms have been conquered
The General Agric Workers Union (GAWU) says government’s fight against the Fall Army Worm invasion is lost despite claims by the agric minister, Owusu Afriyie, that government has conquered these alien worms.
Just recently, deputy agric minister in charge of annual crops Dr. Sagre Bambangi made the case that even though some farmers are still being affected by the fall armyworm, huge acres of infested farms have been recovered through government’s swift intervention of spraying the armyworms.
“So far, I am impressed by the performance of our spraying programme and that of the farmers. I have been to the Upper West Region and here in the Upper East Region, and have seen the signs of the fall army worms in the past in a lot of these farms; but I can also see how these farms have recovered,” he revealed.
But general secretary for (GAWU), Edward Kariweh disagrees with the standpoint of the Agric minister stating that the invasion of the fall armyworms continues to eat thousands of hectares in the Northern Region.
“The battle against the Fall Army Worm invasion is lost, these worms have come to stay and we need to come out with best strategies to attack the situation from the ground,” he revealed.
