The joint police, military galamsey task-force, Operation Vanguard have arrested nine Chinese nationals together with two Ghanaians in illegal mining operation at the Kweikaru Forest Reserve in the New Abirem District in the Eastern Region.
The task-force also set ablaze some heavy mining equipment including 58 Chanfai machines; destroying some other mining camps along the forest reserve.
The police also seized some guns and other offensive weapons including an amount of Ghc66, 000, £100, $340, and ¥2,567.
One Mitsubishi Pajaro, a Nissan Hardbody, One steng gun, 104 catridges of AA ammunitions, two boxes of dynamite explosives, 39 rounds of 9mm long ammunitions, one Jimis, Himderson pistol, one blasting machine, pump action gun, and 1 automatic rifle were also confiscated by the task- force.
The Chinese illegal miners are; Johnson Zhang, 29, Zheng hou, 55, Zhi 47, Tony Yin, 47, Cheng Sheng Xhi, 61, Zao Wen Lu, 43, Liu Zhang Hai, 49, Zhi Gong, 47 and, Shi Zhi Hai, 49
The police also grabbed two Ghanaians namely; Maxwell Anim, 34 and Akare Thompson, 39.
The Eastern Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Mr Attah Owusu told Starr News in Accra that the illegal miners have degraded over 120 hectares of the forest, creating many trenches posing danger to forest guards.
He said, the Kweikaru Forest Reserve which is over 1,200 hectares (12.00km2) is under serious threat by illegal miners.
Mr Owusu added that since 2010 about 1,500 people with different nationalities have invaded the forest tracing and mining gold layers in the forest.
There have been claims that the Police have failed to prosecute illegal miners arrested over the years.
But the Forestry Commission has assured it will ensure the suspects are prosecuted.
