- Mahbub Khondoker Faruk lost a rented rickshaw
- The owner charged him for it and he now has to work as a scavenger
- He shared how badly people treat him because of his lowly occupation
A Bangladeshi man has shared how he has to work as a garbage scavenger to repay the owner of a rickshaw he lost.
Speaking to photojournalist GMB Akash, Mahbub Khondoker Faruk said he was having tea at a roadside stall one day when someone stole the rickshaw.
He said: "I cried for several hours for my rickshaw while sitting on the road side. Nobody even asked me what happened to me!"
He has now worked for six months as a scavenger and has repaid only less than half of the total value of the rickshaw.
Faruk also lamented how badly people treat him because of his lowly occupation.
However, his wife is supportive of him. He said: "In the beginning, I was always ashamed to go home with this strong smell. But my wife Bithy said, 'There is nothing to be ashamed of; you are working not stealing someone else’s dream.'"
Some readers offered to help him. However, it appears that he is determined to work hard and repay the debt on his own. See some reader reactions below.
