- The NDC stated that the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government promised free education for all students at the SHS level
- They further added that parents should pour out on the streets in protest if they are forced to pay fees
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has advised parents against paying fees for the second and third years of their wards in the Senior High Schools (SHS’s).
The Volta Regional chapter of the party released a notice, arguing that the Akufo-Addo-led government promised a Free SHS policy.
In effect, the statement added, the people of Ghana were convinced the package covered all of the three (3) years.
The statement further added that about 565,404 students, who are in the second and third year will miss out on the policy, because president Akufo-Addo deceived Ghanaians.
It further stated that parents should resist any form of coercion to pay fees, and pour onto the streets if they are asked to part with money.
The NDC claimed that they started the are the pioneers of the Free SHS programme. According to them, they started it in 2014, with a $156 million fund from the World Bank.
The further claimed that 10, 400 students benefitted from the programme.
In another development, the NDC has asked the government to apologize for keeping continuing students out of the Free SHS programme.
This, they believed is in a direct contrast to the promise made to Ghanaians in the heat of the 2016 elections.
