Students who gained admission into Presbyterian Senior High School in La, Accra will enjoy Free SHS but are being asked to pay for desk repairs.
A report by Pulse.com.gh stated that the authorities of the school told parents that desks to be used by students had broken down.
The school told parents that they would need to pay fees for desks or their children may have to stand during lessons as government is yet to provide them with new ones.
Speaking on the Accra-based Starr FM, the headmaster of the school confirmed the development.
"We are not asking students to pay anything, we are only asking parents to make voluntary contribution to repair broken down desks before classes start," Samuel Salamat reportedly told the radio station.
According to Mr. Salamat, even though the Free SHS initiative by government has been implemented, this does not mean that parents of the wards should desist from contributing to the welfare of the schools.
"The free SHS policy is not against parents making contribution provided it is not compulsory," he said.
Reports have it that parents of first year students are the LA Presec were also asked to pay 80 Ghana Cedis and 48 Ghana cedis for dusters and other utility fees.
This left some parents and wards devastated as they were expecting free education under the Free SHS program which was launched on September 12 by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
