- Hurricane Harvey caused heavy floods in Texas
- Virgil Smith's entire apartment complex was flooded
- He rescued 17 of his neighbors using an air mattress
Hurricane Harvey caused heavy floods in large parts of Texas, US recently. In the midst of the deluge, a 13-year-old boy emerged as a hero.
Virgil Smith's entire apartment was flooded, forcing him and his mother Lisa Wallace to seek refuge in a second floor apartment.
However, his friend, who couldn't swim, called for help. Virgil immediately swam back to his apartment to get his family's air mattress.
He then used it to rescue 17 of his neighbors who were trapped, including his friend.
In an interview with ABC News, he said: “I put him, his two sisters, one baby and his brother, and I had my other friend by the hand right there, and I set his momma and his step-dad on the air mattress."
With the help of other neighbors, he made two trips to rescue everyone, including an elderly woman in a wheelchair.
His mother Lisa praised him: "All I’m thinking about is I know he’s able to save. He can rescue, he can swim, and I just had faith in the Lord that everything was gonna be alright."
Way to go, Virgil! You're a real inspiration. Watch a related video below.
