- Zimbabwean Rumbidzai Mugabe has vitiligo
- It is a condition that causes light-colored patches on the skin
- She has shared her frustration at being constantly being reminded of it
A Zimbabwean girl has shared her experience of living with vitiligo, a condition that has caused light-colored patches on her skin.
Rumbidzai Mugabe penned a defiant article on The Zimbabwean castigating those who make assumptions about her because of her condition.
She wrote: "How do people expect me to react when they look at me and call me Winnie Harlow or say, 'Oh, you look like Winnie Harlow?'” Winnie Harlow is a Canadian model who also has vitiligo.
She continued: "Have you walked across and met someone who has Lupus, for example, and gone, 'Oh you have that Selena Gomez thing' or 'Hey, you have Psoriasis like Kim Kardashian?'”
She insisted that she is her own person with her own passions. Therefore, she won't become a model like Winnie Harlow simply because she has vitiligo.
Rumbidzai also urged people to stop proposing "solutions" to her condition, such as "prayer" or trying out medication that is still on trial.
She wrote: "As of now, I am not particularly interested in being anybody’s lab rat, especially when the dangers of using this drug are still not known. What I do know is I am fully aware of my condition because I have it and you do not."
Hopefully, her message would be heeded. Watch a related video below.
