The joy of a couple in Kakamega of welcoming a new member to their family was cut short after their daughter passed on just 10 hours after birth.
The baby was born at St Paul's Dispensary on Saturday, September 23 with a deformity where her skull was not properly developed making her brains to grow outside.
Nurses noticed the deformity and informed Valerie Ochiri and advised her that the baby had to be transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for specialised treatment.
However, her husband who is a taxi driver was not able to raise the required amount to hire an ambulance even after negotiating with the driver from Ghc384 to Ghc192.
The deformity had not been detected early even though the young mother never missed attending ante-natal clinic.
It was revealed that no scans had been done to check on the condition of the unborn baby during those visits.
The family buried their baby at their rural home in Kanyabala, Homa Bay county.
