Ghana’s president Nana Akufo-Addo has rewarded the Black Stars B team with a sum of $100,000 following their triumph in the just-ended WAFU tournament.
Ghana successfully defended the WAFU trophy they won in 2013 after trashing rivals Nigeria 4-1 in the final.
A double from Stephen Sarfo and another pair of goals from Vincent Atingah and Winful Cobbina made sure the Black Stars B team walked out of the Cape Coast stadium with the WAFU trophy.
The team subsequently paid a courtesy call on president Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff House on Tuesday to present him the trophy they won last Sunday.
After commending the squad for their achievement, the president confirmed that he will reward the entire team with a sum of $100,000 for emerging winners of the tournament.
Addressing the players at the Flagstaff House, Akufo-Addo said: “I have been reassured by the vice president [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia], who is in charge of our money, together with the Senior minister, that I can also add and also give you a bonus. So this token of appreciation of the nation for this exceptional feat and this excellent result, I’m going to also add a $100,000 for the whole team.”
The remuneration will come as welcoming news to the Black Stars B squad, with the team set to earn the same amount from organisers for winning the WAFU cup.
